Electric linear cylinder actuator

An electric cylinder actuator is an electromechanical device with a motor that transforms rotary motion into linear motion. A linear electric cylinder actuator can manipulate and move objects in a straight line. Insofar as it generates movement, the cylinder is a member of the actuator family. The term actuator is used when the actuator stroke is limited. Cylinders are either pneumatic or hydraulic. By extension, the term electric actuator is used to designate the electric motor assembly.

A servo cylinder is a controlled actuator. A servo cylinder is a type of cylinder that incorporates feedback mechanisms to provide precise control of position, speed and force. These systems combine the features of conventional cylinders with the precision and control of servomotors, giving extremely controlled and precise movement.

Main components of a linear cylinder actuator

Cylinder

The main body of the cylinder is made up of a cylindrical tube or cylinder in which the piston moves.

Piston

The piston of an electric cylinder is the moving part inside the cylinder. The piston creates the linear movement.

Piston rod

Connected to the piston, the electric cylinder's rigid rod extends from the cylinder to transmit force and linear movement to the load.

Seal

The seal prevents fluid or air leaks between the piston and cylinder in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

Energy source

To operate a linear actuator, a source of energy is required, delivered by an electric motor, hydraulic pump or air compressor, which is necessary for the movement.

How a linear cylinder actuator works

A cylinder is characterised by its stroke, the diameter of the piston and the pressure it can withstand.

Energy conversion

To operate a cylinder, the electric motor, hydraulic pump or air compressor supplies the energy needed to create the movement.

Transmission of movement

In an electric cylinder, the motor turns a screw, driving a nut to produce linear movement. In hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, fluid or air pressure pushes the piston.

Linear movement

The movement of the piston or nut drives the piston rod in a straight line, creating the desired linear movement.

Linear cylinder actuator applications

Linear cylinders actuators are used in a wide variety of applications. Thanks to their ability to provide high forces and precise movement, linear cylinders actuators are indispensable in many industrial sectors.
